Since the Harry Potter series do you think anyone will be able to write a good witch based fantasy book?

I mean the Harry Potter series is still very popular. So can anyone write a witch based fantasy with out being acused of feeding off of J.K. Rowling's left overs? Did this one series kill the chance of another series? Not that I don't like the Harry Potter books and movies, I do. That is the problem. She has set such a high standard with the books, I just don't know if another author could to the same. Or if people would give them a chance.

I think that it has been done time and again. Your definition of good can be applied in many different ways. There have been many a couple of series that have characters who appear Potterish.

There is never going to be a good fantasy, but realistic book as good as harry potter.

Yes it's inevitable, before Harry Potter, there was like Silly Rabbit said the Chronicles of Narnia, and there was The Lord of the Rings, and there were probably people who thought that there never be anything as interesting and immersing as those fantasy worlds.

bet I can. haha, just kinding. it is gonna be pretty hard to write a better book, well, it'll be impossiable.

Definitely. That's the beauty of literature. There are always new authors coming out with new ideas and new takes on old ideas. Anyone who loves to read and loves the fantasy genre should be open to exploring other authors. I'm not saying they'll all be blockbuster sellers like Harry Potter has turned out to be, but some should at least be intruiging reads.

Have you read any of the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher? They're not exactly in the same vein as the Harry Potter books, but I've recently started reading the series and have become a fan. They are about a wizard and private eye, Dresden, and the various otherwordly issues he has to face. They're a fairly light read, but humorous and unique as well. Storm Front is the first in the series...start there and see if you like it.

Yes. there where several before this series, and there are more yet to come. No one book can ruin it for the rest of a certain subject or genera. The most, and only thing they should do is enrich the subject and give it variety and flavor.

No one shoud ever set out to make a movie or book that will be the end all be all of a certain type or subject. It is literatly impossible to do and is instantly doomed to failure. Each new book and movie can certainly raise the bar, but it shoudn't ever ruin anyone else's chance of creating another great story to add to the collection.

If that where true, there would be no point in ever reading a new book from a new author or ever watching a new movie that came out. The world is dynamac and ever-changing. What's hot today may very well be NOT tomorrow. I do beleive that J.K. Rowling has created a series that will last through the annals of time and that is an "instant" classic, but it won't ruin it for the rest of the population that will want to create a fantasy based witch book. People are always looking for the next book to read, and the next great movie to watch, man.

The world is not going to stop (for too long) over just one book or movie. Besides, there are people out there who hate the Harry Potter series, but would love a different book of the same subject. It's all a matter of personal taste.

Oh yes, most definitely. Before Harry Potter, there was the Chronicles of Narnia, which is also a excellent magical story.

There are already dozens of witch books. It isn't as if she even invented the secret child with magic powers genre. Any major money maker spawns dozens of imitators, take a look at all the "inteview with a vampire" clones out there, once those books sold.

People can still write good witchbased fantasy books - it's just that the story will have to be totally different from Harry Potter, that is, they won't be able to go to a witch school or have a boy who has been orphaned or something like that.

I agree with others, HP's success has actually *spawned* a huge number of imitators rather than discouraging them. On the other hand, you may be correct in thinking that better, or at least well-established, writers may well avoid the specific topic for a while since anything simialr is bound to be compared to HP, and possibly be accused of being a "rip-off".

Of course, it is possible that HP will go down in history as "the" classic sorcerer book, but I doubt it. The creation of a "definitive" in the literary world is very unusual, and books aimed at younger readers only rarely achieve this status.

wait for mine to come out, and then you'll see! :D

there might be authors out there who wants to write new books to make it big like JK, but lots of readers would think they copied JK, cause you can't write a new witch/wizard book without mentioning the slightest thing that reminds readers of the Harry Potter books.

There's a rumour that JK might write a totally different series about another character, I can't wait!!!

I think that any witch/wizard book after Harry Potter book will be compared to it. If the book series can break free of the "Harry Potter" mold, then it'll be treated as a separate series. There have been witch/wizard books before Harry Potter and there will them after. I think it depends on the writing ability of the author.

no...nothing will ever be as huge or grand as harry potter 4 centuries..why?this sort of stuff r only original n grand when it's the 1st...and the last...rowling made d rite choice to end it..w. harry n frens as adults...such a good way 2 end it...

well,shows like bewitched,tv show w. Liz Montgomery was immensely successful a samantha...in d 8 yr run..why?it's d 1st of its kind...

of course, people has lots of ideas and who knows, theres a person who can do more better..

it can always be done. all anyone needs is an imagination...and anything can come true on paper!! some might be, better some might be worse...but just because it's not to harry potter standard doesn't mean it's not good...right??

Of course! Let's face it - even though the story is good, the books themselves are fairly poorly written. I love the stories and own them all but cringe at times over phrases or sentences (especially in the American version of the books. They are appalling! Go with the original versions every time). All it will take is for a more talented writer to come up with a storyline just as engaging. There are also already heaps of witch/wizard type books out that are better written but less well known. Try Dianna Wynne-Jones for one.
