What are some important facts and details in the 1st Harry Potter Book?

My goddaughter (7 years old) gave me her favorite series, Harry Potter, and I promised her that I would read the first book by the next time I saw her. Well, I didn't read it, and I see her in a couple of days, and I need some some to convince her that I read it. Don't get me wrong, I had all intentions of reading the book, but I just never got around to it.

What can you tell be about "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone"?

An eleven year old boy called Harry who has dark, messy hair and glasses as well as a lightning shaped scar on his forehead lives a miserable life with his aunt, uncle and fat cousin. One day Harry gets a letter and he is invited to come and study at a school called Hogwarts, where he is to learn to use magic. Harry is a wizard, one of a race of people (witches and wizards) who live in secret alongside ordinary people (who are called Muggles).

When he gets to Hogwarts he realises that he is actually famous because when he was a baby the most evil wizard of all time (Voldemort) tried to kill him but failed (hence the lightning shaped scar). Since then Voldemort has disappeared and so Harry is sort of the saviour of the wizarding world.

He meets two best friends, Ron and Hermione (Ron is red-haired and a bit of a loser and Hermione is bushy-haired and very very clever but annoying).

At the end of a year of potion-making, learning to use wands and flying broomsticks (playing the wizard version of football, called Quidditch), Harry and co. go through a secret place in the school that leads them to the Philosopher's Stone (if you're American they've probably called it the Sorcerer's Stone in your edition). This stone gives eternal life to the user and Harry encounters the evil wizard Voldemort there, trying to steal the stone. He manages to stop Voldemort getting the stone and Voldemort disappears (for now), leaving Harry okay and Dumbledore (the headmaster of Hogwarts + wise old man) very pleased with him.

The end.

You really should just read the book, the first one was short and simple, written at about a 11 year old reading level, it took my nine year old a day to read, and me just a few hours. Later in the series they get longer, but the first few are a really easy read.

This is a great opportunity for you to share one of her interests, Harry Potter is one of my daughters interests that I love just as much as she does (if not more). What a shame if you cheat her out of really sharing this with you.

Umm,it only takes a day to read it...

Why don't you read it now? It isn't that big. Anyway, shame on you god-mother, for a) lying and b) not reading one of the best books evar!

This an easily read short book. You are her god mother for goodness sake. Read the book!
