I think the entire point of the series is that Harry *isn't* all that smart.
He's not brilliant, he's not exceptionally talented, he's just lucky. That's not by mistake. It makes the character of Harry Potter extremely accessible to readers, because you don't have to be particularly bright to be able to relate to him.
If he was the "chosen one" AND smart AND always beat the bad guy AND Dumbledore's favorite AND everything else, it would be excessive and annoying and unrealistic.
J.K. Rowling made a very conscious decision to make him an average person, that is quite clear. That is why Hermione is so bright, why all of Harry's friends have special talents and strenghts that help him over the years.
It's to make the point that you don't have to be "amazing" to be able to do good.
Though, in Harry's defense, he did the best that he could. Yes, he was grumpy and sometimes mean to people. But look at how he was raised. He lived in a closet under the stairs for his entire childhood and was raised by people who hated him. When he finally went to school, he lacked the social and emotional skills to be able to cope with people being nice to him. He did the best that he could, I think, but if you grow up that way, you're going to have a hard time showing affection and compassion to others.
He was also a teenager. Teenagers are moody, that's just a fact of life.
And, he also spent seven years of his life being practically hunted by an evil wizard. Of COURSE he will be grumpy, you would be too.
But no, he's not particularly smart or deserving of all the attention that he got. And that was the point.
No seeing as in the fifth movie voldemort is usually controlling him... in all the other movies he appreciates his friends. All the characters are extremely well thought up and j.k. Rowling did an excellent job keeping us at the edge of our seats while reading the books and seeing the movies. Snape is an enemy to harry and bullies him so harry doesn't take it. No wonder he's dumbledores favorite; mostly because they are so much alike. I think all the characters in that series are magnificent; especially harry and hermione:)
Whaaaaat? Ha are you kidding me harry potter is the shizzz and what are you talkin bout he's mean to ron? No he's not that's his best friend have you even read the books cause maybe you don't understand im assuming your talking about the order of pheonix movie? Yeah he's goin thru a lot in that movie he jus saw cedric die and he came face to face w/ voldamort plus he and voldamort were sharing visions and feelings that's why he was mean to ron he wasn't really himself at the time remember he says "I feel angry all the time.." Yeah dude don talk bout my harry man die hard hp fan lol
I don't think Harry Potter is stupid. I don't think he's exceptionally great either. He's just an ordinary kid to whom extraordinary stuff happens. I actually think he handles himself well, given the bizarre circumstances he finds himself in.
Yes of course the other characters are some what more interesting. The thing is, Harry doesn't really have any specific characteristic. He's written in such a way that most people can identify him and feel like they are in Harry's place when they read the books.
I don't think his character is stupid...I mean if you think about it, he is a lot like your average teenager. He gets himself into trouble, he has a mouth sometimes, he's cocky sometimes, and he's moody. JUST like a teenager...which is what he is. I think Rowling did a great job of making him real.
the main problem with Harry is his temper.. He can't control it.. He's so sensitive about all things.. He's ego-maniac.. You see in the beginning of book 5 when he first taunted dudley and dudley retorts with the cedric thingy.. he was the first one to flare up.. well, he's not my fave character.. I like Hermione and Luna better..
It's just a book..
some people like to read about those kinds of things.
I do tend to read the Harry Potter series if I have nothing better to read.
But you can ask that same exact question about every single type of fictional book out there.
(i.e. TWILIGHT.)
Ugh come on. That's your own opinion. It's just a book. Also, don't base your judgment on the movies. The real Harry Potter is the one in the books. If you delve in deep, you'll find that he's a good kid who cares.
You forgot Hermione. She makes Harry look like a drooling idiot. I think the fact that he's not the brightest or best behaved makes for a more interesting story, however, since perfect protagonists are mind numbingly boring.
I honestly hate Harry Potter (character) sometimes.
I honestly love Harry Potter (series) all the time.
Harry gets to be way too angsty for me very often.
