Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 (Movie-Only Edition) [Blu-ray] Review

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 (Movie-Only Edition) [Blu-ray] Overview

The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is the film all Harry Potter fans have waited 10 years to see, and the good news is that it's worth the hype--visually stunning, action packed, faithful to the book, and mature not just in its themes and emotion but in the acting by its cast, some of whom had spent half their lives making Harry Potter movies. Part 2 cuts right to the chase: Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) has stolen the Elder Wand, one of the three objects required to give someone power over death (a.k.a. the Deathly Hallows), with the intent to hunt and kill Harry. Meanwhile, Harry's quest to destroy the rest of the Horcruxes (each containing a bit of Voldemort's soul) leads him first to a thrilling (and hilarious--love that Polyjuice Potion!) trip to Gringotts Bank, then back to Hogwarts, where a spectacular battle pitting the young students and professors (a showcase of the British thesps who have stolen every scene of the series: Maggie Smith's McGonagall, Jim Broadbent's Slughorn, David Thewlis's Lupin) against a dark army of Dementors, ogres, and Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter, with far less crazy eyes to make this round). As predicted all throughout the saga, Harry also has his final showdown with Voldemort--neither can live while the other survives--though the physics of that predicament might need a set of crib notes to explain. But while each installment has become progressively grimmer, this finale is the most balanced between light and dark (the dark is quite dark--several familiar characters die, with one significant death particularly grisly); the humor is sprinkled in at the most welcome times, thanks to the deft adaptation by Steve Kloves (who scribed all but one of the films from J.K. Rowling's books) and direction by four-time Potter director David Yates. The climactic kiss between Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson), capping off a decade of romantic tension, is perfectly tuned to their idiosyncratic relationship, and Daniel Radcliffe has, over the last decade, certainly proven he was the right kid for the job all along. As Prof. Snape, the most perfect of casting choices in the best-cast franchise of all time, Alan Rickman breaks your heart. Only the epilogue (and the lack of chemistry between Harry and love Ginny Weasley, barely present here) stand a little shaky, but no matter: the most lucrative franchise in movie history to date has just reached its conclusion, and it's done so without losing its soul. --Ellen A. Harry Potter and the room of Secrets by J K Rowling

The rediscovery of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter and the chamber of Secrets is as lively and special as it was the first time around. But some facts still need to be faced, Harry Potter and the chamber of Secrets is darker than the first book in the series and disturbing too. The antagonist of the book Voldemort is ingeniously evil - as the only thing he thinks of is destroying others and establishing himself as the ruler.

Harry Is Keen To Go Back To Hogwarts

Harry Potter

The book starts with Harry eagerly awaiting his return to Hogwarts since that is the only place where he feels happy, and because his friends are there. He doesn't have a happy home at all since he has lost his parents and he lives with his uncle and aunt. The world of Hogwarts is lively and lively and each new book in the series discovers more about the place and its way of life. The readers also get a deeper comprehension into the ghosts roaming the school and new spells such as Polyjuice potion. The best part of the book is when Harry is introduced to the Burrow, Weasleys' home. This is the first time he is looking at a wizarding family's home. He is amazed to see there are no televisions in those homes, though Quidditch team posters instead of soccer team posters were only to be expected.

Voldemort Is Memory This Time

The author J K Rowling is great at arrival up with innovative ways of introducing Lord Voldemort throughout the novels. In the chamber of secrets he becomes a memory so he may take benefit of the weaknesses in the history of Hogwarts. Just like the former book, there is a clever twist in Harry Potter and the chamber of Secrets too where the readers are in suspense over the identity of the Voldemort confidant in the Hogwarts. The author superbly illustrates how even the inevitable may be unclear to population even in the vicinity.

Strong Story That Holds on Its Own

Even those who haven't read the first book in the series, will still find that Harry Potter and the chamber of Secrets has strong adequate article to stand on its own. J K Rowling has written Harry Potter and the chamber of Secrets with so much imagination, that she ignites large interest in her young readers as well, who can imagine themselves on the walls and halls of Hogwarts with Harry Potter. Although the older readers also enjoy the book as much, they may lack the imagination that the youngsters have.

Harry Potter Series Vs Twilight Saga

Well for me, I think there is no think for comparison for the two series has its own dissimilar types of genre, themes, settings and concept.

Harry Potter series as we all know is categorized as a children's books but for me the book is for all ages. It is more of an adventure than of a love story. Although it is concentrated on the main character which is Harry Potter and we see the story from the character's points of view, it also shows some scenes from the other characters points of view and sometimes scenes that doesn't contain Harry Potter himself which oftentimes happens at the first episode of the book. The book tackles about the lives, struggles and adventures of Harry Potter. Most of the settings in the story (except book 7) are inside the Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry.

Harry Potter

Twilight saga is categorized as suspense thriller and love story. I think it is more of a love story than of an adventure. The story revolves on one of the main characters which is Isabella Swan and we hear the story all the time from that characters point of view although there is an irregularity in the last episode of book 2 and the second part of book 4 which is I think for some confident reason, when Bella was bed ridden, the author cannot write much about her since Bella is just stationed in one place. The book tackles about the love story of two very dissimilar people and the conflicts that it includes. Most of the settings are inside the whole town of Forks and only a few scenes happen inside the school.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince [Blu-ray] Specifications

The sixth installment of the Harry Potter series begins right where The Order of the Phoenix left off. The wizarding world is rocked by the news that "He Who Must Not Be Named" has truly returned, and the audience finally knows that Harry is "the Chosen One"--the only wizard who can defeat Lord Voldemort in the end. Dark forces loom around every corner, and now regularly attempt to penetrate the protected walls of Hogwarts School. This is no longer the fun and fascinating world of magic from the first few books—it's dark, dangerous, and scary.

Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) suspects Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) to be a new Death Eater recruit on a special mission for the Dark Lord. In the meantime, Professor Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) seems to have finally removed the shroud of secrecy from Harry about the dark path that lies ahead, and instead provides private lessons to get him prepared. It's in these intriguing scenes that the dark past of Tom Riddle (a.k.a. Voldemort) is finally revealed. The actors cast as the different young versions of Riddle (Hero Fiennes-Tiffin and Frank Dillane) do an eerily fantastic job of portraying the villain as a child. While the previous movies' many new characters could be slightly overwhelming, only one new key character is introduced this time: Professor Horace Slughorn (with a spot-on performance by Jim Broadbent). Within his mind he holds a key secret in the battle to defeat the Dark Lord, and Harry is tasked by Dumbledore to uncover a memory about Voldemort's darkest weapon--the Horcrux. Despite the long list of distractions, Harry, Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) still try to focus on being teenagers, and audiences will enjoy the budding awkward romances. All of the actors have developed nicely, giving their most convincing performances to date.

More dramatic and significant things go down in this movie than any of its predecessors, and the stakes are higher than ever. The creators have been tasked with a practically impossible challenge, as fans of the beloved J.K. Rowling book series desperately want the movies to capture the magic of the books as closely as possible. Alas, the point at which one accepts that these two mediums are very different is the point at which one can truly enjoy these brilliant adaptations. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is no exception: it may be the best film yet. For those who have not read the book, nail-biting entertainment is guaranteed. For those who have, the movie does it justice. The key dramatic scenes, including the cave and the shocking twist in the final chapter, are executed very well. It does a perfect job of setting up the two-part grand finale that is to follow. --Jordan Thompson

But for me the two authors are both excellent writers in their own field. They give justice to their characters and they can as a matter of fact work on your emotions while reading their books. They make you feel like you are the character in that book and you're experiencing the same situations because you can as a matter of fact feel the intensity of their emotions. They give every singular thread of details that even you can't present what its like.

So if you're a kind of reader who likes more of an adventure, then I think you will like Harry Potter series better. And if you are more type of a romance reader who likes more of a love story, then, you will like the Twilight saga better.

So I think it's unfair to collate these two book series and please stop production fuss about it, okay, both the book series are gorgeous and are as a matter of fact fun to read.

How about you, which do you think is better, Harry Potter or Twilight?

The Voice Behind Harry Potter Audio Books

The extraordinary voice you hear on the Harry Potter audio books belongs to the seasoned Broadway actor, Jim Dale. This award winning actor started doing the voice over for Harry Potter books eight years ago. Mr. Dale has successfully been able to merge many different characters and voices into the script and has done so magnificently. Although hesitant at first to take on the project, Mr. Dale did so at the golden age of 71. He even won a Guinness World report award for being able to originate 134 character voices in the Order of the Phoenix. Each time a new book in the Potter series is released, an audio version goes out at the same time. That means that Mr. Dale must stay on top of things to make sure that all audio is ready by a set deadline date.

In all, Jim Dale has created over 200 cut off voices for all of the Potter audio versions. And, to his credit, more than 5 million copies of these extraordinary audio books have been sold since 1999. This beats the world report for the best-selling audio books of all time.

Harry Potter

The Harry Potter audio series has some captivating facts attached to it. It would take you five full days (117 + hours) to listen to the entire series in unison. To listen to the entire series in your car would mean driving at 60 miles per hour from New York to Seattle to Los Angeles to Atlanta and back to New York. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows consists of 17 Cds or 12 cassettes and over 635,000 copies of the audio version were ordered when the book first came out.

Or if you want, you can add in more characters to the milieu such as Lord Voldemort himself, Professor Snape, Professor McGonagall, Professor Flitwick, Mrs. Norris, Argus Filch and more Dementors for more spellbinding chases requiring the difficult Patronus Charm to successfully fend them off.

Surprisingly enough, this Lego Castle is made in all the likeness, as much as possible, of the Hogwarts Castle we have come to love both in the book as well as in the film. The Lego version has even got the clock tower with the swinging pendulum, the Gryffindor Tower, as well as hidden rooms even Harry has never ventured in before.

It is so incredibly detailed that both hard-core and non-fans can appreciate it. You'll get to see Dumbledore's office with its sliding spiral staircase. You can even visit the Slytherin and Gryffindor tasteless rooms, and listen to Professor Trelawney's spellbinding divination lectures in her eclectic classroom.

With the seventh and last installment of the Harry Potter film close upon us, as well as the Christmas season itself, Lego Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle is more favorite and more in-demand than ever. Satisfy your kid's quest for wizardry and curiosity in magic with this handsomely-detailed, faithfully-rendered Castle.

On Friday November 19th, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: The Hunt Begins opens in theaters nationwide. This final chapter of the Harry Potter film franchise will be broken down into 2 parts, with the last advent out sometime in July 2011. The plot of this film follows the book to the same degree that the other films do. Here, Harry, Ron and Hermione leave the protection of Hogwarts to find and destroy the Horcurxes - the incommunicable to the evil Lord Voldemort.

Of course, each time a Harry Potter movie comes out; there is renewed interest in costumes from this magical wizarding tale. And, with the June 18, 2010 opening of "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter," a Universal Studios theme park in Orlando, Florida, all things Harry Potter is hot, hot, hot! Dressing up as a Harry Potter costume for Halloween, a child's birthday party or for the opening-day festivities of Deathly Hallows.

Harry Potter

In much of the story, Harry, Ron and Hermione are not wearing their customary school garb because they have banded together to leave the aggregate and help bring down Voldemort who is out lurking in the world. So costume ideas for these characters should focus on typical teenager type clothing, paying special attentiveness to the unavoidable facial features of each.

Jeans, plaid shirts and jackets make a great start for Harry Potter Deathly Hallows costumes. To recreate Harry's look, dark hair and a pair of gold, round eyeglasses are a much - as is the iconic lighting bolt scar on his forehead which was inflicted on him when he was just a baby. A Hermione costume should highlight a long, light brown with of wavy hair -- as she's gotten older, her hair is undoubtedly not as bushy as it once was. Also, magic books and a wand also go well with her costume as she's ordinarily the one to figure out the clues and spells first. A red, short wig and freckles will complement a Ron Weasley costume.

As for the villains of the film, costume ideas include He-Who-Should-Not-Be-Named (aka Lord Voldemort) for guys and Bellatrix Lestrange for the gals. A Lord Voldemort costume can be put together with a dark cloak or cape, a bald cap and white face paint to generate a hideous snake-like face. The look of a Bellatrix Lestrange costume is that of disheveled goth girl. A goth costume in black with ripped fishnet stockings and a messy long black wig will cast an evil spell!

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Widescreen Edition) Overview

Lord Voldemort has returned, but few want to believe it. In fact, the Ministry of Magic is doing everything it can to keep the wizarding world from knowing the truth - including appointing Ministry official Dolores Umbridge as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts. When Professor Umbridge refuses to train her students in practical defensive magic, a select group of students decides to learn on their own. With Harry Potter as their leader, these students (who call themselves "Dumbledore's Army") meet secretly in a hidden room at Hogwarts to hone their wizarding skills in preparation for battle with the Dark Lord and his Death Eaters. . New adventure - more dangerous , more thrilling than ever - is yours in this enthralling film version of the fifth novel in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. A terrifying showdown between good and evil awaits. Prepare for battle!

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Widescreen Edition) Specifications

Alas! The fifth Harry Potter film has arrived. The time is long past that this can be considered a simple "children's" series--though children and adults alike will enjoy it immensely. Starting off from the dark and tragic ending of the fourth film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix begins in a somber and angst-filled tone that carries through the entire 138 minutes (the shortest of any HP movie despite being adapted from the longest book). Hopes of winning the Quidditch Cup have been replaced by woes like government corruption, distorted media spin, and the casualties of war. As the themes have matured, so have the primary characters' acting abilities. Ron (Rupert Grint), Hermione (Emma Watson), and especially Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) are more convincing than ever--in roles that are more demanding.

Harry is deeply traumatized from having witnessed Cedric Diggory's murder, but he will soon find that this was just another chapter in the continuing loss he will endure. Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) has returned and, in an attempt to conceal this catastrophe from the wizarding public, the Ministry of Magic has teamed up with the wizard newspaper The Daily Prophet to smear young Potter and wise Dumbledore (Michael Gambon)--seemingly the only two people in the public eye who believe the Dark Lord has returned. With no one else to stand against the wicked Death Eaters, the Hogwarts headmaster is forced to revive his secret anti-Voldemort society, the Order of the Phoenix. This welcomes back characters like Mad-Eye Moody (Brendan Gleeson), kind Remus Lupin (David Thewlis), fatherly Sirius Black (Gary Oldman), and insidious Severus Snape (Alan Rickman), and introduces a short list of intriguing new faces. In the meantime, a semi-psychotic bureaucrat from the Ministry (brilliantly portrayed by Imelda Staunton) has seized power at Hogwarts, and Harry is forced to form a secret society of his own--lest the other young wizards at his school be left ill-equipped to defend themselves in the looming war between good and evil. In addition, Harry is filled with an inexplicable rage that only his Godfather Sirius seems to be able to understand.

This film, though not as frightening as its predecessor, earns its PG-13 rating mostly because of the ever-darkening tone. As always, the loyal fans of J.K. Rowling's books will suffer huge cuts from the original plot and character developments, but make no mistake: this is a good movie. --Jordan Thompson

communicate of Lego Harry Potter - Years 1-4

The Lego game idea has spanned three beloved franchises in the past: Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Batman. Now a fourth has been added to the list in the form of the Boy Who Lived. Jk Rowling's creation, Harry Potter, has been given the little plastic block treatment, and the follow is a game that is fun, fresh and very addictive.

The Lego games have always been fun, thanks to their excellent recreation of the field matter on which they are based, as well as the irreverent attitude they take to that field matter. But, aside from characters and settings, there precisely hasn't been much of a unlikeness between them. We've been to Tatooine and the Amazon with these games, but the unabridged dynamic hasn't changed much in any of the former versions. You can read that someone else way, of course... The game-play was getting old.

Harry Potter

It seems that developers Travellers Tales were well aware of the problem, because Lego Harry Potter: Years 1 - 4 brings a very distinct feel with it. Sure, it's still a Lego game, and the basic ideas are the same, but additions and tweaks to these ideas have made a weighty unlikeness to the unabridged palpate that it offers.

The distinct change is that the game has a distinct setting. Now the player will be able to eye a Lego version of Hogwarts, which is a sprawling environment that allows the player a lot of freedom. The magic school has been recreated from the films, and events that play out in the game are based on the movies, rather than the books (hardly surprising when you reconsider that the game is published by Warner Bros, the same business that did the films). There is a lot to do in Hogwarts, from collecting studs (which is tasteless to all the games, and serves as currency in this title) through to gathering Hogwarts crests and more. The free roaming that the game allows implies (as do the myriad items that propose interactions later on) that the player will be revisiting areas time and again to way things they couldn't get to before. This is a wonderful concept, but it also adds a bit of trudging to the game.

The player will be able to make use of 167 unlockable characters through the policy of the game, and will be able to learn new spells and abilities as they go through the various chapters in the game. That's where going back to redo things comes in. Take, for example, polyjuice potion. Studying to use this potion will allow the player to change characters at favorably placed cauldrons. Need to get through a door that will only allow Hufflepuff house students access? No problem... Simply use polyjuice to assume the form of a Hufflepuff character. The catch is that you may come over such a door in the first chapter, but you'll only learn the skill in the second. I am sure you see what I am getting at.

It's great fun, and the use of distinct magic spells allows the player to interact with the world of a Lego game like never before. Wingardium Leviosa, for example, will enable the player to design individual Lego blocks to solve puzzles. Previously, construction was kind of automated, and while there still is automatic construction this time around, the puzzles add a new dimension to the game.

The game also features a drop-in / drop-out multiplayer, which is brilliantly handled this time around. Players can play through all four chapters together (which cover The Philosopher's Stone, The chamber of Secrets, The Prisoner of Azkaban and The Goblet of Fire) thanks to an intuitive split screen implementation that only splits the screen when necessary. This is one of the best implementations of split screen we have ever seen.

The game doesn't highlight too many boss battles, and vehicle sections are mercifully kept to a minimum (because they were nasty in other Lego titles). On the whole, the game is a beautifully presented, fairly forgiving title that shines above a few of the former Lego games. It's great fun for the whole family, and well worth playing, offering tons to do and lots of humour for those customary with the Harry Potter stories.

Harry Potter Movies

I love movies, all movies. The only television I watch is normally a movie, with the exception of the Sopranos (what about that last lesson huh!?) or possibly MindFreak, with the creepy but cute, Chris Angel.

I enjoy Harry Potter and love the books. I have read them all except the final one, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". My daughter has had her head buried in it for two days now, and I will be the next to read it.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Book 2) Overview

The Dursleys were so mean that hideous that summer that all Harry Potter wanted was to get back to the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as he's packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange, impish creature named Dobby who says that if Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike.

And strike it does. For in Harry's second year at Hogwarts, fresh torments and horrors arise, including an outrageously stuck-up new professor, Gilderoy Lockheart, a spirit named Moaning Myrtle who haunts the girls' bathroom, and the unwanted attentions of Ron Weasley's younger sister, Ginny.

But each of these seem minor annoyances when the real trouble begins, and someone--or something--starts turning Hogwarts students to stone. Could it be Draco Malfoy, a more poisonous rival than ever? Could it possibly be Hagrid, whose mysterious past is finally told? Or could it be the one everyone at Hogwarts most suspects...Harry Potter himself?

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Book 2) Specifications

It's hard to fall in love with an earnest, appealing young hero like Harry Potter and then to watch helplessly as he steps into terrible danger! And in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the much anticipated sequel to the award-winning Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, he is in terrible danger indeed. As if it's not bad enough that after a long summer with the horrid Dursleys he is thwarted in his attempts to hop the train to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to begin his second year. But when his only transportation option is a magical flying car, it is just his luck to crash into a valuable (but clearly vexed) Whomping Willow. Still, all this seems like a day in the park compared to what happens that fall within the haunted halls of Hogwarts.

Chilling, malevolent voices whisper from the walls only to Harry, and it seems certain that his classmate Draco Malfoy is out to get him. Soon it's not just Harry who is worried about survival, as dreadful things begin to happen at Hogwarts. The mysteriously gleaming, foot-high words on the wall proclaim, "The Chamber of Secrets Has Been Opened. Enemies of the Heir, Beware." But what exactly does it mean? Harry, Hermione, and Ron do everything that is wizardly possible--including risking their own lives--to solve this 50-year-old, seemingly deadly mystery. This deliciously suspenseful novel is every bit as gripping, imaginative, and creepy as the first; familiar student concerns--fierce rivalry, blush-inducing crushes, pedantic professors--seamlessly intertwine with the bizarre, horrific, fantastical, or just plain funny. Once again, Rowling writes with a combination of wit, whimsy, and a touch of the macabre that will leave readers young and old desperate for the next installment. (Ages 9 and older) --Karin Snelson

We have seen the first Harry Potter movie, "The Sorcerers Stone". It was a discontentment in that it stole our imagination, and forever more when we read the books, we see the Harry from the movie, the Snape from the movie , the Hogwarts from the movie, and so on. We can't recall the others from our imagination, pre-movie!!

The traditional Harry Potter movie resembled the book as closely as possible. They did an wonderful job, but regardless, the scene with the unicorn in the woods and Voldemort floating above with blood dripping from his mouth, burned a horrifying foresight on my daughter's memory. The book never affected her in a negative way, but the optic seared a clear and chronic image. This leads me to the issue of movie ratings. Who in their right mind comes up with these G ratings? Are they insane or just childless? The only other explanation is that they are completely desensitized to the optic violence and terrific images.

Why are they so desperate to have every child see these movies? Couldn't it be something for the younger children to look transmit to with great anticipation, for when they get older? My son is seven and only just recently watched the first Harry Potter movie after completing the book. The book was an absolute prerequisite to the movie. He was prepared for most of what was arrival , but even then we fast forwarded the scarier bits.

I know some will think me paranoid and over protective, which is fine with me. I know my children can sleep at night with the lights off and not have nightmares. I will reiterate what I said at the beginning, I love movies, all movies, but I think parents have to be choosy, even if it goes against the norm, and stand up to that adult peer pressure and do what is right for their child.

The movie ratings are not devised with a child's best interest at heart. The traditional motivation is to get as many to see the movie as speedily as possible, and put as much money as inherent into the pockets of the associates involved. I have friends who won't even let their children read the Harry Potter series. That is going a slight too far for me, but the movie manufactures should be held socially responsible for the degree of realism in the content, and it is up to the parents to question it. We will finally see the whole series of Harry Potter movies, but in our own good time, and when each child is emotional ready.

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix Review

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix Feature

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix Overview

In his fifth year at Hogwart's, Harry faces challenges at every turn, from the dark threat of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and the unreliability of the government of the magical world to the rise of Ron Weasley as the keeper of the Gryffindor Quidditch Team. Along the way he learns about the strength of his friends, the fierceness of his enemies, and the meaning of sacrifice.

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix Specifications

As his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry approaches, 15-year-old Harry Potter is in full-blown adolescence, complete with regular outbursts of rage, a nearly debilitating crush, and the blooming of a powerful sense of rebellion. It's been yet another infuriating and boring summer with the despicable Dursleys, this time with minimal contact from our hero's non-Muggle friends from school. Harry is feeling especially edgy at the lack of news from the magic world, wondering when the freshly revived evil Lord Voldemort will strike. Returning to Hogwarts will be a relief... or will it?

The fifth book in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series follows the darkest year yet for our young wizard, who finds himself knocked down a peg or three after the events of last year. Somehow, over the summer, gossip (usually traced back to the magic world's newspaper, the Daily Prophet) has turned Harry's tragic and heroic encounter with Voldemort at the Triwizard Tournament into an excuse to ridicule and discount the teen. Even Professor Dumbledore, headmaster of the school, has come under scrutiny by the Ministry of Magic, which refuses to officially acknowledge the terrifying truth that Voldemort is back. Enter a particularly loathsome new character: the toadlike and simpering ("hem, hem") Dolores Umbridge, senior undersecretary to the Minister of Magic, who takes over the vacant position of Defense Against Dark Arts teacher--and in no time manages to become the High Inquisitor of Hogwarts, as well. Life isn't getting any easier for Harry Potter. With an overwhelming course load as the fifth years prepare for their Ordinary Wizarding Levels examinations (O.W.Ls), devastating changes in the Gryffindor Quidditch team lineup, vivid dreams about long hallways and closed doors, and increasing pain in his lightning-shaped scar, Harry's resilience is sorely tested.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, more than any of the four previous novels in the series, is a coming-of-age story. Harry faces the thorny transition into adulthood, when adult heroes are revealed to be fallible, and matters that seemed black-and-white suddenly come out in shades of gray. Gone is the wide-eyed innocent, the whiz kid of Sorcerer's Stone. Here we have an adolescent who's sometimes sullen, often confused (especially about girls), and always self-questioning. Confronting death again, as well as a startling prophecy, Harry ends his year at Hogwarts exhausted and pensive. Readers, on the other hand, will be energized as they enter yet again the long waiting period for the next title in the marvelous, magical series. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6) Overview

The war against Voldemort is not going well; even the Muggles have been affected. Dumbledore is absent from Hogwarts for long stretches of time, and the Order of the Phoenix has already suffered losses.

And yet . . . as with all wars, life goes on. Sixth-year students learn to Apparate. Teenagers flirt and fight and fall in love. Harry receives some extraordinary help in Potions from the mysterious Half-Blood Prince. And with Dumbledore's guidance, he seeks out the full, complex story of the boy who became Lord Voldemort -- and thus finds what may be his only vulnerability.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6) Specifications

The long-awaited, eagerly anticipated, arguably over-hyped Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has arrived, and the question on the minds of kids, adults, fans, and skeptics alike is, "Is it worth the hype?" The answer, luckily, is simple: yep. A magnificent spectacle more than worth the price of admission, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will blow you away. However, given that so much has gone into protecting the secrets of the book (including armored trucks and injunctions), don't expect any spoilers in this review. It's much more fun not knowing what's coming--and in the case of Rowling's delicious sixth book, you don't want to know. Just sit tight, despite the earth-shattering revelations that will have your head in your hands as you hope the words will rearrange themselves into a different story. But take one warning to heart: do not open Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince until you have first found a secluded spot, safe from curious eyes, where you can tuck in for a good long read. Because once you start, you won't stop until you reach the very last page.

A darker book than any in the series thus far with a level of sophistication belying its genre, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince moves the series into murkier waters and marks the arrival of Rowling onto the adult literary scene. While she has long been praised for her cleverness and wit, the strength of Book 6 lies in her subtle development of key characters, as well as her carefully nuanced depiction of a community at war. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, no one and nothing is safe, including preconceived notions of good and evil and of right and wrong. With each book in her increasingly remarkable series, fans have nervously watched J.K. Rowling raise the stakes; gone are the simple delights of butterbeer and enchanted candy, and days when the worst ailment could be cured by a bite of chocolate. A series that began as a colorful lark full of magic and discovery has become a dark and deadly war zone. But this should not come as a shock to loyal readers. Rowling readied fans with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by killing off popular characters and engaging the young students in battle. Still, there is an unexpected bleakness from the start of Book 6 that casts a mean shadow over Quidditch games, silly flirtations, and mountains of homework. Ready or not, the tremendous ending of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will leave stunned fans wondering what great and terrible events await in Book 7 if this sinister darkness is meant to light the way. --Daphne Durham

Why We Love Harry
Favorite Moments from the Series
There are plenty of reasons to love Rowling's wildly popular series--no doubt you have several dozen of your own. Our list features favorite moments, characters, and artifacts from the first five books. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Enjoy.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

* Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him.
* When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists.
* Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards.
* Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

* The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius.
* Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother.
* The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

* Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'.
* Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behavior in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children.
* The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

* Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them.
* Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it.
* Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge.
* Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

* Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming.
* Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone.
* Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager.
* Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape.
* Dumbledore's confession to Harry.

Magic, Mystery, and Mayhem: A Conversation with J.K. Rowling

"I am an extraordinarily lucky person, doing what I love best in the world. I’m sure that I will always be a writer. It was wonderful enough just to be published. The greatest reward is the enthusiasm of the readers." --J.K. Rowling

A Few Words from Mary GrandPré

"When I illustrate a cover or a book, I draw upon what the author tells me; that's how I see my responsibility as an illustrator. J.K. Rowling is very descriptive in her writing--she gives an illustrator a lot to work with. Each story is packed full of rich visual descriptions of the atmosphere, the mood, the setting, and all the different creatures and people. She makes it easy for me. The images just develop as I sketch and retrace until it feels right and matches her vision." Check out more Harry Potter art from illustrator Mary GrandPré.
